Thomaston: The Town that Went to Sea

Thomaston Business District - 1857 to 1880

Just a few years later, the Union Block was built in 1857 at the Lower Corner, Thomaston’s business section at the intersection of Main and Knox Streets, followed by the Singer Block in 1869, and the Levensaler Block on the southern side of the street in 1872.

By the 1880s, Thomaston was deemed to be one of the wealthiest towns in the nation due to the influence of shipbuilding.
