§ Born on December 29, 1835.
§ Entered the army on September 3, 1861, as a private.
§ Promoted to Captain October 4, 1861.
§ Participated in his first battle at Middletown, Virginia on May 24, 1862.
§ Wounded at Middletown, Virginia on May 31, 1862.
§ Taken prisoner in Middletown, Virginia on June 24, 1862.
§ Promoted to Major May 8, 1862.
§ After being released by the Confederates, he was left in Middletown until he could be moved in August 1862.
§ Participated in the Second Battle of Bull Run on Aug. 28-30, 1862.
§ Participated in the Battle of Sulphur Springs August 1863.
§ Confined in Armory Square Hospital from December 1863 to April 1864.
§ Participated in the Battle of North Anna May 23-26, 1864.
§ Participated in the Battle of Haws Shop May 28, 1864.

Comrade Jonathan Cilley
Who was born the 29th day of December A.D. 1835 In Thomaston, County of Knox, and State of Maine. Entered the service as a Private in Co. B of Maine Cavelier, September 3, 1861 at Thomaston, ME. Was promoted to rank of Captain October 4, 1861, Major May 8, 1862, lieuntnant col. June 7, 1864, Colonel March 13, 1865. Was discharged August 11, 1865 at Augusta, ME with rank of Brevet Brigadier General.
First battle to participate in was Middletown May 24/62. Other battles are as follows Sulphur, Spring, Amisville, Bull Run, Maine Run, Little Washington, Spring Station, Bowling Gicon, North Anna, Hawes Show, Cold Harbor, Trevillian Station White House Landing, St. Mary’s Church, Stone Creek, Wyatt’s Farm – Plank Road Billifield, Jawatt Station, Halston River, Dinwiddie Court House, Jacksonville Farm Cross Roads, Deatersville Sailorcrat, High Bridges, Farmville, and Appomattox Court House.
Was wounded at Middletown May 31 1862, St. Mary’s Church June 24, 1864, Dinwiddie Court House Mar. 31 1865.
Was Confined in Armory Square Hospital from Dec. 1863 to Apr. 1864. Was taken prisoner at Middletown, VA June 24, 1862 by Gen. Stonewall Jackson’s Forces. Was never in prison, was paroled and left disabled at Middletown where he remained until able to be moved in Aug. 1862.
Most important event in the service were his being the first man who enlisted, the first man wounded, and among the very last to be mustered out all that he was present at the surrender of Gen. Lee’s army at Appomattox , and that he commanded the 1st ME Cav. During the year of service
