Georges Valley High School currently educates about 300 students from the surrounding towns of Cushing, St. George, Port Clyde, Tenants Harbor, and Thomaston. The mission of the district is “Excellence in Education,” and Georges Valley High School strives to provide this education in a meaningful and engaging way. Teachers at the school look for ways to incorporate the community in the education its children, and the Maine Heritage Community Project has been one avenue to help attain this goal. This project has allowed community members a common endeavor to focus on with students in two classes. It has opened the doors for community members to share their knowledge in the classroom as well as for students to enter the community to attain knowledge from community members. Finally, students have had the opportunity to take a hands-on approach to the history of their town.
